About LaRue Woodworking

At only age 8, William LaRue started working with wood in 1982, his first production projects where cutting boards with handles made from the Hard Maple trees that were harvested, sawn and milled on site at their 240+ year old family farm. William got started selling these cutting boards to family friends and people at his church. The original pattern board is on display in his office today.

By the age of 10, William was making solid wood models of the Space Shuttles with a launch tower and Tractor Trailer Trucks (seen here to the right) with details of the clearance lights, exhaust stacks, air horns, air cleaners, dual wheels, working landing gears on the trailer and even a working tail gate on the trailer. From there he went on to designing wall mounted candelabras, picture frames, mirrors, wooden baby rattles, etc.

In 1992 William entered one of his wood lathe turned baby rattles as his 4-H wood project. That same year a good friend of his Adirondack chair as her 4-H wood project. Needless to say her project went on to the New York State Fair for judging and display as one of the best wood projects from Saratoga County and William's didn't. This was the point he decided that this would never happen again! In the following months William designed a coffee table that was going to build for solely for the 1993 Saratoga County Fair 4-H wood project. In order for William to make this coffee table he had to purchase a few tools that weren't in the family woodshed, 2 of these power tools are still being used on a daily basis in the current wood shop. This project, seen on the left, was the true "kick-off" project that started William in forming the official company today, LaRue Woodworking.

In only 3 short years after making the leap into trying to make a business out of working with wood, 1996, at age 20, William contracted his first large project. This project was a large Red Oak entertainment center to fit into a curtain area in a customer's house. This entertainment center was built as three separate sections, the end sections have built-in lighted display cases, one is for a porcelain fire house collection, the other is for model NASCAR collection. In the center section William incorporated a center support that transfers the weight of the TV right to the floor eliminating the shelves from bowing from the weight.

1999, William designed and built, over the next 11 months, a bed that was displayed at the 2000 Northeast Woodworkers Showcase held in Saratoga Springs, NY. This bed was too big for the woodshop and was built in sections in his moms garage stall. William didn't finish the last piece, the top canopy unitl the night before the Showcase. The first time this bed was assembled was in Saratoga at the Showcase with hundreds of other amateur and professional woodworkers looking on. Every piece went together like it was suppose to. With all the encouragement from the other wood workers and the 1000's of onlookers at the Showcase, William decided to work towards the expansion of his business and the building of a new wood shop, which is incorporated into the current work space.

By 1996, William expended his business to also include a refinishing/restoration part to LaRue Woodworking. Today, there is a very good chance if you stop over there is another addition in the process. LaRue Woodworking employees 5 men and women and occupies approx. 7000sq-ft of space. LaRue Woodworking offers a start to finish program where the customer can either use their own tree or buy one from LaRue Farms and the process is 100% completely controlled by LaRue Woodworking. They own and operates everything from a properly harvested 75 acre wood lot to a log trailer, 2 sawmills, a Dry Kiln, a milling shop, the woodshop, a spray booth and now even a photo studio.

"We do it all, from the tree to the finish piece!"
